As part of a conceptual design project, I collaborated on reimagining an old barn into a contemporary R&D hub for Samsung’s R&D division. The idea was to create an environment that fosters innovation while providing employees with a peaceful yet playful atmosphere—taking inspiration from workspaces like Google’s to spark creativity and collaboration.
The goal was to balance functionality, sustainability, and employee well-being within the constraints of the existing structure. Key considerations included creating diverse work spaces, enhancing acoustics for phone testing, and incorporating amenities to recharge and inspire employees.
Key Features of the Design
1. Diverse Workspaces: The concept included a mix of open desks, private offices, and collaborative meeting rooms to suit different working styles.
Acoustic treatments were integrated to ensure sound control—critical for Samsung’s R&D activities focused on phone acoustics.
2. Natural Materials & Sustainability: The design utilized materials like wood, bamboo, glass, and concrete, creating a warm and modern aesthetic while emphasizing sustainability. These natural elements softened the industrial feel of the original barn.
3. Playful & Relaxing Amenities: To foster creativity, the design included features such as a games and recreation zone, a cafeteria, and a tranquil zen garden. These spaces aimed to provide employees with areas to recharge and build community.
4. Acoustic Optimization: Specialized acoustic treatments and sound-dampening paneling addressed the need for quiet and focused work environments, while also supporting Samsung’s phone testing processes.
5. Zoning & Layout: The design separated the barn’s open entrance from the main workspaces, creating functional zones that maintained a productive and distraction-free environment.
The Vision
This concept demonstrated how outdated spaces can be repurposed into functional and inspiring work environments. By blending peaceful elements with playful touches, the design aimed to create a space where employees could thrive creatively while meeting the technical demands of Samsung’s R&D work.
Though this project was conceptual, it offered valuable insights into how thoughtful design can enhance productivity and well-being in the workplace.
